Trekking Japan's 'Three Great Ways': Shogun, Merchant, and Pilgrim
This bespoke 21-day journey is customizable for travelers seeking profound immersion into Japan's history and spirit through rewarding light trekking. The itinerary follows a unique spiral narrative — an ascent that builds from the secular world to the sacred..
The journey commences in Tokyo by exploring Japan's "Tale of Two Cities". Trek the shogun's power corridors at Hakone and the time-worn paths of the Edo-era Tokyo–Kyoto trail. Conclude this foundational phase with Japan's 1,000-year capital, Kyoto, which is steeped in exquisite aesthetics and classical arts.
Then pivot to the sacred. Cross to Shikoku Island for a focused four-stage section of the 88 Temple Pilgrimage — discover aspiration, discipline, enlightenment, and nirvana. This spiritual quest completes its dialogue with nature and divinity in the sacred Kii Mountain Range for a temple stay at Koyasan and a meaningful pilgrimage walk on the Kumano Kodo.
The itinerary "completes the circle" with a return to the secular world. From spiritual highlights, we transition back to modern life via a local homestay and a day exploring vibrant Osaka.
Allow us to tailor this adventure for you — we can refine every detail to craft the perfect journey you envision.

Tired during our Shikoku Pilgrimage hike, we passed a house and exclaimed, “Wow!” at a basket of freshly picked persimmons. The owner immediately put down what they were doing and gave us a large bagful. Eating the sweet persimmons as we walked, we briefly forgot how tired we were.
