Japan's fall foliage season 2026 is from late September to mid-December. The best time to see fall leaves in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Hakone is from late November to early December.

Consider visiting Japan this autumn? Fall is one of the best times to visit: the great sunny weather, beautiful colors, and more importantly, it is less crowded than spring and summer.

Want a trip that feels relaxed, meaningful, and full of memorable moments, not just tourist stops?

Here's how to plan a fall foliage journey that goes deeper.

Japan Fall Foliage Forecast 2026

Japan's 2026 fall foliage season is expected to arrive later due to the warmer weather this year. Below you'll find the latest 2026 forecast map for autumn foliage based on the current weather and 2025 data

In popular cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, the peak colors come around November 20 to early December.

The timing of the autumn colors depends on the temperatures. In warmer years, the colors come later.

For example, in 2025, the weather was dry and warm, so the red leaves were delayed. On November 18, we still saw a mix of green and red leaves at Eikan-do and Arashiyama.

Discover the top fall foliage spots in Japan and enjoy a unique and immersive trip this autumn.

1. Kyoto – Explore Autumn Colors in Historic Surroundings

  • Best time to view: Late November - Mid-December

If you have to choose only one place to visit this autumn. It must be Kyoto!

Kyoto's fall foliage is more than just colorful leaves - it's a seamless blend of tradition, beauty, and history.

Spend 3-4 days in Kyoto this autumn for the perfect balance of nature and culture. Visit Eikan-do Temple for its iconic fall colors, wander the historical Zen temple and gardens of Saihō-ji Temple to experience Japan's unique aesthetic, and enjoy a relaxing boat ride in Arashiyama, soaking in serene views of the mountains.

Best places for fall foliage in Kyoto:

Kiyomizu-dera: Kyoto's most iconic temple. The streets surrounding it offer a traditional Kyoto vibe. Visit in the late afternoon to catch the most beautiful sunsets here.

Eikan-do: Kyoto's most beautiful temple for fall colors, with the largest number of maple trees. The temple and its red leaves are beautifully lit at night.

Saihō-ji: This peaceful moss garden is perfect for a leisurely walk. Enjoy the moss, ponds, and surrounding woods. Slow down and try meditation here.

Kifune Shrine: Enjoy fall foliage at a shrine off-the-beaten-path. Take an easy walk along the mountain path beside a stream. Pray at the temple for better relationships with your loved ones. It's said to be very effective.

Tips for a smart visit to Kyotyo:

  • If you plan to see night illuminations, stay in the Southern Higashiyama area, like the area around Gion. So you can walk back to your hotel from illumination gardens such as Kiyomizu-dera, Kodai-ji, or Eikandō. It can be hard to get a taxi in the evening.
  • Since the fall color spots are spread out, it's best to group them by areas. For example, visit Saihō-ji and Arashiyama together, or combine Kifune Shrine and Eikan-do for a more efficient day of sightseeing.

2. Tokyo – Stroll Through Autumn Gardens

  • Best time to view: Late November to Early December

Fall in Tokyo isn't just about chasing color—it's about how you enjoy its gardens and the outdoors at a relaxed pace. See the best spots to see fall colors in Tokyo:

Rikugien Garden: This Edo-period garden offers peaceful ponds, charming bridges, and vibrant maple trees. Take it slow at the Fukiage Chaya tea house: sip tea, enjoy wagashi, and soak in the autumn leaves. The garden is beautifully illuminated in the evening.

Shinjuku Gyoen: A traditional Japanese garden with picturesque bridges, ponds, and perfectly maintained greenery. Close to Shibuya and Harajuku, it's easy to combine this garden with other nearby sights for a relaxing half-day trip.

Mount Takao: For outdoor lovers, hike Mount Takao in autumn to explore the forest and ancient temples. There are several trails to the top, and we'll help choose the best one based on your fitness level. On a clear day, you may even catch a glimpse of Mt. Fuji from the summit.

Tips for a smart visit:

  • Want to see the autumn illuminations at Rikugien Garden? Stay near Shinjuku or Tokyo Station so you can easily reach the park via the JR Yamanote Line.
  • You won't need to visit too many spots, as the scenery is quite similar; only choose one or two for a relaxing half-day tour
  • If your itinerary includes Kyoto, there's no need to specifically plan for fall foliage in Tokyo. Kyoto's autumn colors are far more stunning.

3. Nikko – Explore Japan's Best Fall Colors Near Tokyo

  • Best time to view: Late October - Early November

If you're chasing autumn colors in October or early November, Nikko is one of the best spots near Tokyo.

About a 2-hour drive from the city, Nikko's fall colors usually peak in late October, about a month earlier than Tokyo.

If you're visiting in mid-October, start at Lake Chuzenji in Oku-Nikko, where the leaves turn first. Take a calm, scenic walk along the 5.6 km lakeside path, which is usually pretty quiet. Along the way, check out charming spots like the British Embassy Villa and Italian Embassy Park.

By around November 10, most of the leaves at Lake Chuzenji have fallen, so we usually focus on Toshogu Shrine—Japan's world heritage temple, beautifully wrapped in autumn colors.

By mid-November, Nikko starts to get busy. We recommend staying overnight for a more relaxed trip. Base yourself in the Kinugawa area so you can enjoy the hot springs too. A day trip would feel very rushed.

Don't worry about the visibility! November skies are crisp and clear, and on sunny mornings, you'll often get a clear view of the snow-capped peak

During our visit on November 14, the weather had turned cold, and most trees were bare.

How Crowded is Japan during the Autumn foliage Season?

Saihō-ji TempleSaihō-ji Temple is quiet in autumn

Yes, Japan gets busy during the fall foliage season, but it rarely feels chaotic.

From airport customs to sightseeing, everything runs smoothly. Staff are always on hand to guide you, and restrooms are easy to find—so there's no need to stress.

Not every spot is crowded, and you will find quiet places. Popular places in Kyoto, like Eikan-do and Tenryu-ji in Arashiyama, can get busy, especially inside the gardens. You might need to wait for the perfect photo spot, but everyone waits quietly; there's no pushing or shoving.

Even in Kyoto, you can find peaceful corners. The northern areas, like Kifune Shrine and Sanzen-in, are much quieter. We can also arrange an exclusive Zen experience at the tranquil Saiho-ji. The temple requires a reservation, ensuring a serene and very quiet visit.

You can also explore off-the-beaten-path destinations, like Shikoku. Last autumn, I walked the 88 Temple Pilgrimage route. It was extremely peaceful, and I only saw local travelers. Even in the well-known Ritsurin Garden, you'll encounter far fewer people than in Kyoto.

The busiest period is mid- to late November, when Kyoto's autumn colors are at their peak and absolutely fiery.

How Expensive is Japan during the Fall Foliage Season

Autumn is one of the most expensive times to visit Japan. It's slightly cheaper than the cherry blossom season, but prices are still high.

Hotel rates can soar by 50% to 100%, especially in Kyoto, Tokyo, and Hakone. For example, a 4-star hotel that normally costs around $200 per night may rise to $400 during peak foliage season.

In other cities, like Osaka, hotel prices usually increase by 20% to 50%.

The most expensive period is from mid-November to early December, when Kyoto's hotel rates can jump 50% to 150% compared to off-peak times.

How to Pack for Your Japan Fall Foliage Trip

Autumn weather in Japan can be quite changeable, with warm days and cool evenings, so pack layers.

In Central Japan (Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka), temperatures in November range from 7–17°C (45–63°F). Toward the end of the month, it gets colder, around 10°C during the day and 3–4°C at night.

Packing Tips:

  • Layer up: wear short sleeves during the day
  • Add a long-sleeve shirt or hoodie for mornings and evenings.
  • Bring a light jacket for early to mid-November.
  • Pack a warm coat if you're visiting in late November or early December.

Mount Fuji & the Alps: Expect chilly mornings and even a touch of frost by November. You'll want layers and a warm jacket, especially if you're out for sunrise views or hiking.

Hokkaido: In October, it already feels like winter. Daytime highs can drop to 5–10°C (41–50°F), and snow may appear in Daisetsuzan by late October. Bring warm outerwear and boots if you're visiting northern regions.
