Nara is always at the top of many travelers' lists when they visit Japan. You can get close to many deer and explore Japan's traditional history and culture.

So, how do you plan a perfect one-day trip to Nara? In this article, I share tips from my two visits. Our maps of itinerary, attractions, and transport help you understand the city and plan your trip with ease.

Nara's Location Map - Where is Nara in Japan?

Nara is in the midwestern part of Japan. It takes less than an hour to get there from Kyoto and Osaka. That is why it is one of the most popular day trip destinations from these two cities.

Nara Itinerary Map - How to Plan a Perfect Day Trip

This is the route I most recommend based on my two trips to Nara: start from Kyoto, spend most of your day in Nara, and end the day in Osaka for an overnight stay.

This way, you don't need to go back the same way, and you can make better use of your time. The same idea works if you start from Osaka instead.

Here is the itinerary for your inspiration:

  • Begin your trip from Kyoto. On the way to Nara, you can also stop at Fushimi Inari Shrine. It is usually less crowded in the morning.
  • Then, head to Nara to explore the major highlights of Nara Park, Tōdai-ji Temple, and Kasuga Taisha Shrine.
  • Finally, go to Osaka to stay overnight.

Nara's Attractions Map

Compared to Kyoto and Osaka, Nara is a small city. Its main highlights are very close to each other and within a 10-minute walk. You can easily explore them in one day without rushing.

Here are three must-see attractions in Nara: Nara Park, Todaiji Temple, and Kasuga Taisha Shrine. They show the best of Nara and give you a great introduction to the city.

Nara Park: The best place to get close to the deer. It has the largest number of deer in Nara. You can buy deer crackers to feed them and gently pet them.

Tōdai-ji Temple: One of the largest wooden buildings in the world. The Great Buddha inside is the main highlight. If you only visit one temple in Nara, this is the one I recommend most.

Kasuga Taisha Shrine: A shrine surrounded by an ancient forest. It is quieter and less crowded, and you can also feed the deer here.

If you visit Nara during cherry blossom season and enjoy outdoor activities, you can go to Mount Yoshino. It is about a 1.5-hour drive from downtown Nara. You can hike there and see cherry blossoms covering the whole mountain.

Nara Transportation Map - Get to Nara from Osaka or Kyoto?

It is very convenient to travel to Nara from either Kyoto or Osaka. Whether by train or private car, it takes less than an hour to get there.

The city you depart from mainly depends on your itinerary.

  • If you arrive in Japan in Tokyo and travel along the route Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka, it is best to visit Nara from Kyoto.
  • If you arrive in Japan in Osaka and begin your trip there, you can visit Nara from Osaka.
