1. 7-Day Classic Japan Autumn Itinerary
- Best for: First-timers who want to see Japan's best autumn scenery in a limited time
- Recommended Travel Time: Late Nov to early Dec
- Route: Tokyo - Kyoto - Osaka
If this is your first trip to Japan and you only have a week, this is the route we'd recommend. It combines Japan's most famous cities with its best autumn scenery, giving you a great first taste of the country without feeling rushed.
Travel from late November to early December if you can. During this time, Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka are all at their best, so you don't have to chase the autumn colors from one region to another.
You'll spend more time in Kyoto than anywhere else. This is where Japan's autumn feels most immersive, with maple-covered temples, peaceful gardens, and traditional streets creating the classic autumn scenery you imagine.
Here's how we'd spend 7 days in Japan during autumn.

- Days 1-2: Tokyo
- Days 3-5: Kyoto
- Days 6-7: Osaka and departure
Days 1-2 in Tokyo: Ease into Your Japan Trip
Start your trip in Tokyo and enjoy its famous highlights before heading deeper into Japan.
Visit places like Meiji Shrine and Sensoji Temple, then slow the pace with a walk through Rikugien Garden or the Nezu Museum, where autumn colors make the city feel surprisingly peaceful.
Days 3-5 in Kyoto: Spend More Time Where Autumn Is at Its Best
If there's one place worth slowing down, it's Kyoto. I've visited many parts of Japan in autumn, but Kyoto is still my favorite. The combination of brilliant maple leaves, centuries-old temples, quiet gardens, and traditional culture is hard to beat.
For a more local experience, visit Saiho-ji Temple to see its Zen garden, open only in autumn. You can also explore Eikando Temple, one of Kyoto's most popular spots for autumn leaves. These are the moments that make an autumn trip to Japan feel truly special.
Days 6-7 in Osaka: Savour the Street Food
After several days of temple visits and autumn sightseeing, Osaka is a great place to slow down before heading home. Spend your last days exploring Dotonbori and join a food tour to try local favorites like takoyaki and okonomiyaki.
Japan's autumn isn't just about where you go; it's also about how you experience it. You can just use this itinerary, or if you want to change it based on your interests, we can help you at any time.
2. 10-Day Japan Autumn Itinerary: Add More Depth
- Best for: First-timers who want to experience more of Japanese culture
- Recommended Travel Time: Mid to late Nov
- Route: Tokyo - Hakone - Kyoto - Nara - Osaka
If you have 10 days, we extend the 7-day itinerary by adding Hakone and Nara. This creates a better balance between busy cities and slower, more relaxing destinations, and gives you more time to experience a traditional ryokan stay with an onsen and nature.
Here's our suggested 10-day Japan autumn itinerary:

- Days 1-3: Tokyo
- Day 4: Hakone
- Days 5-7: Kyoto
- Day 8: Nara
- Days 9-10: Osaka and departure
In Hakone, you can relax in traditional hot springs, stay in a Japanese-style room with tatami mats, and enjoy views of Mount Fuji with its snow-capped peak in the distance.
Nara is one of Japan's oldest capitals. You can get close to the friendly deer and enjoy autumn leaves around Todai-ji Temple and Kasuga Taisha Shrine. Compared to Kyoto, it has fewer tourists and a more relaxed atmosphere.
With the right timing, we can help you capture Japan's autumn colors at their peak and experience the country in a meaningful way. Join our 11-Day Japan Autumn Splendor Tour to explore the best of Japan in the fall!
3. 14-Day Japan Autumn Itinerary: Mix of Autumn Foliage and Seasonal Events
- Best for: Travelers who want to explore Japan in more depth
- Recommended Travel Time: Mid to late Oct.
- Route: Tokyo - Nikko - Mount Fuji - Takayama - Kyoto - Osaka
If you extend your trip to 14 days, you can see autumn leaves, enjoy traditional autumn festivals, and hike in the mountains to get closer to nature. It makes your trip more complete and gives you a deeper experience.
We suggest starting your trip after Oct 10. Tokyo and Kyoto may not be at peak autumn colors yet, but mountain areas like Mount Fuji, Kamikochi, and Takayama already are. You can also catch Jidai Matsuri in Kyoto and the Doburoku Festival in Takayama.
Here's a suggested 14-day Japan itinerary for your inspiration:

- Days 1-2: Tokyo
- Day 3: Lake Kawaguchi
- Days 4-5: Nikko
- Days 6-7: Takayama and Shirakawago
- Day 8: Hike in Kamikochi
- Days 9-11: Kyoto
- Days 12-13: Osaka
- Day 14: Departure
Days 1-2 in Tokyo: Adjust Your Jet Lag
Begin your trip in Tokyo to help you adjust to the time difference and ease into Japan at a comfortable pace.
You can walk along the tree-lined paths at Meiji Shrine, take a rickshaw ride to Senso-ji Temple, and enjoy the lively atmosphere at Shibuya Crossing.
Day 3 in Lake Kawaguchi: See Mount Fuji and Early Autumn Colors
Lake Kawaguchi is one of the earliest places near Tokyo where autumn colors appear. By October, the maple leaves around the lake are already turning red, giving you a first taste of Japan's autumn scenery.
The Maple Leaf Corridor is our top pick! You can see Mount Fuji and the autumn leaves in one picture.
Day 4 in Nikko: Discover Shogunate History
Nikko is a perfect blend of nature and history. You can visit Toshogu Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, learn about the shogunate era, and get a deeper understanding of Japan.
Lake Chuzenji is my favorite spot for autumn leaves in Nikko. You can take a slow walk along the lake or go boating if you like. If you want a great view, head up to the observation deck at Kegon Falls.
Days 6-7 in Takayama and Shirakawago: Explore Traditional Japanese Villages and Autumn Festival
Next, journey to Takayama and Shirakawa-go to enjoy a different side of Japan, away from big cities. This area is chosen for its traditional countryside atmosphere and seasonal autumn festivals.
The unique part is to join the Doburoku Festival. At this festival, you can sample locally brewed doburoku sake, a seasonal exclusive. What makes it extra special is the fact that you can't buy it anywhere else! Plus, you can see a vibrant lion dance performance during the festivities.
Day 8 in Kamikochi: Last Chance for Hiking
October is your last chance to hike in Kamikochi, and it is also when the mountain views are at their best. You can enjoy fewer crowds and get closer to nature.
The autumn leaves usually peak in mid-October, so you can see beautiful fall colors together with snow-capped mountains.
Whether you are a beginner or an experienced hiker, Kamikochi has trails for everyone. We can help you choose the best route based on your preferences.
Days 9-11 in Kyoto: Watch Locals in Traditional Costume Parades
We save Kyoto for later so you can experience the Jidai Matsuri. It is one of Japan's most iconic autumn festivals, held every year on October 22.
You can see thousands of people in costumes from different periods of Japanese history walking through the streets of Kyoto. From samurai to royalty, it feels like you've stepped back in time.
We suggest choosing spots near Heian Shrine or the Kyoto Imperial Palace to watch the parade. These historic places give you a more immersive experience and better photo opportunities.
Days 12-13 in Osaka: Enjoy Some Free Time
After nearly two weeks of sightseeing, hiking, and festivals, Osaka is the perfect place to slow down. Spend your last few days shopping, enjoying street food, or just exploring the city at your own pace before heading home.
