The hydrangea season usually lasts from late May to mid-July, with June being the best time to see the flowers at their peak. If you visit Japan in June, you'll have a good chance of catching beautiful hydrangea blooms.

This article covers the best places to see hydrangeas in Japan, exact timing, and practical tips for planning your visit.

Hydrangea season in Japan in 2027 typically runs from late May to early July, with blooms appearing later as you travel farther north.

In central Japan, including Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, hydrangeas usually peak in June.

In southern Japan, such as Fukuoka, the hydrangea season often begins in late May, while in northern Hokkaido, the flowers typically bloom in early July.

We especially recommend visiting in June. The hydrangeas look their best during the rainy season and the weather usually feels much more comfortable than the hot days of July.

Best Places to See Hydrangea

We've selected some of Japan's best hydrangea spots across different cities and styles, so you can choose the ones that best match your destination, interests, and travel time.

Kamakura Hydrangea

Kamakura is one of the most popular hydrangea destinations in Japan. It is blend of historic temples, stone paths, and hydrangeas blooming along peaceful hillsides.

Kamakura Meigetsuin Temple

  • Best Time: Jun. 10 to Early-July
  • Access: About 1 hr from Tokyo by train

Meigetsuin is known as the "Hydrangea Temple." It is famous for its soft, misty blue flowers, and during peak season, the entire hillside surrounding the temple turns blue.

As you walk up the stone steps lined with blooming hydrangeas, you can fully experience the beauty of a traditional Japanese temple.

Meigetsuin is one of Japan's most popular hydrangea spots, so it is very crowded. During peak season, entry can take an hour or more, and the famous hydrangea stone path is usually filled with visitors.

We recommend to arrive before 9–10 AM. If you want a quieter experience, try to get there before 9 AM, as the temple becomes very crowded after 10 AM.

Kamakura Hasedera Temple

  • Best Time: Late May to late June
  • Access: About 1 hr from Tokyo by train

Hydrangeas cover the hillside paths here, creating one of Kamakura's most scenic temple walks. As you make your way up the slope, you'll see colorful flowers on one side and the coastline stretching out on the other.

During hydrangea season, the temple also sells limited-edition hydrangea charms and souvenirs.

The temple is not very large, so most people spend around 2 hours here. After your visit, you can easily walk to the nearby Enoshima Electric Railway and ride the nostalgic seaside train toward Enoshima or other coastal stops.

Tips:

Book your tickets on the official website at least one week in advance. Tickets are released every Thursday at 10 AM.

Hakone Hydrangeas Train

Best Time to Visit

  • Lower Hakone (around Hakone-Yumoto): from mid-June
  • Upper Hakone (around Gora and Chokoku-no-Mori): late June to mid-July

In Hakone, you can enjoy hydrangeas by riding the scenic Hakone Tozan Train through a blooming flower tunnel. You can also see rare hydrangea varieties at Gora Park.

The railway connecting Hakone-Yumoto Station and Gora Station is lined with large numbers of hydrangeas. You can slowly ride the train through an endless tunnel of blue and purple flowers, along with the rainy mist and old mountain tracks.

If you want to continue enjoying hydrangeas, you can get off at Gora Station and walk to Hakone Gora Park. There, you can see a variety of rare hydrangea species and beautifully maintained gardens.

For train tickets, you can simply buy them at the station.

Kyoto Mimuroto-ji Hydrangeas

  • Best Time: Mid June to early July
  • Access: About 40–60 min from central Kyoto

At Mimuroto-ji, you'll walk through hillsides covered in thousands of hydrangeas surrounding a quiet traditional temple. The flowers become even more vibrant after rain.

You can also relax at the temple teahouse with matcha and Japanese sweets while looking out over the blooms.

Long lines are commonduring peak season, so I recommend you arrive around 8:30am (opening time).

Night illuminations are typically held on weekend evenings from mid to late June, around 7pm–9pm.

Tokyo Hydrangea

Tokyo's hydrangea spots are known for their unique mix of city scenery and seasonal flowers.

Tokyo Sumida Park

  • Best Time: Late May to late June

Sumida Park is best known for its 2 km hydrangea walkway, where you can see colorful flowers framed against the skyline of Tokyo Skytree.

Mornings are the best time to visit. It's easy to combine with Asakusa, Tokyo Skytree, or a Sumida River cruise.

Kawaguchiko Yagizaki Park

  • Best Time: Mid–late June
  • Access: 2 hrs by car from Tokyo

Yagizaki offers lakeside hydrangeas with open views of Mt. Fuji on clear days. The setting feels open, spacious, and highly photogenic.

From late June, during the Kawaguchiko Herb Festival, you can also enjoy lavender fields, local sweets, and small stalls.

Compared to other hydrangea hotspots, it's far less crowded. It pairs easily with a Kawaguchiko lake cruise or a ryokan stay around the lake.

Osaka Hydrangea

Osaka's hydrangea experience combines serene temple gardens with scenic mountain rides.

Unnō-in Kannonji Temple

  • Best Time: Mid June-Mid July
  • Access: About 1.5 hrs by car from Osaka

Kannonji is a small hydrangea temple where you can see floating hydrangeas in the pond and a narrow path lined with dense, layered blooms.

We recommend visiting in late June. That's when the floating hydrangeas in the pond first appear. It's one of the most Instagrammable scenes, with koi fish and ducks moving through the water.

You can also buy limited-edition hydrangea-themed omamori during the blooming season.

Evening illuminations run until 8pm and are extended to 9pm on weekends.

Mt. Rokko Cabble Line

  • Best Time: Hydrangea season, typically June to early July
  • Access:1 to 1.5 hours from Osaka to Mount Rokko

Mt. Rokko Cable Line is a rare experience in Kobe where you can enjoy hydrangeas and scenic views together while riding a cable car.

Along the route, you'll see clusters of hydrangeas in soft blue tones known as "Rokko Blue." The retro-style cable car also opens up wide views of Kobe city and the sea, so the journey itself is part of the attraction.

Tickets are sold at Hanshin Electric Railway Umeda Station. No reservation is needed, but it is recommended to go early to buy on weekends and during peak bloom season.

Tips for Hydrangea Visiting

  1. Mid to late June is usually the best time to see hydrangeas in most parts of Japan. The flowers are at their peak, so you're very unlikely to miss them.
  2. Bring rain gear. A clear umbrella is the best choice.
Hydrangea season often comes with rain. It doesn't block your view, and it's also one of the best props for taking photos on rainy days.
  3. Wear slip-resistant shoes.
Viewing spots are often located in temples, parks, or hillside gardens. Expect stone paths, stairs, and uneven terrain that can become slippery when wet. Comfortable, non-slip walking shoes are essential.
  4. Start early to avoid crowds.
Try to arrive before 9:00 AM when visiting popular hydrangea temples and gardens. June is the start of Japan's summer travel season, and these spots can get very crowded later in the morning.
