Taking the Shinkansen (the high-speed train) is your best choice to travel quickly and comfortably around Japan.
You can buy Shinkansen tickets either online or at station vending machines, which are the two main ways. However, you might be unsure which option is suitable for you, especially if it's your first time visiting Japan.
No worries! This guide will provide you with everything you need to know from our real experience, including the best way to buy Shinkansen tickets, seat differences, and other smart tips.
How to Choose the Right Seat Types
There are four types of seats on the Shinkansen. The most common ones are reserved seats and non-reserved seats. The other two are more luxurious options: the Green Car and Gran Class.
Reserved seatsReserved seat: Selecting a reserved seat is my top recommendation! You can choose a seat based on your preferences, like by the window or aisle, sit together with your family/partner, and have enough space for your luggage.
Non-reserved seat: If you want a cheaper ticket, go for this option. However, since the seat isn't chosen, you might have to stand if no seats are available, especially during holidays and weekends. If you miss it, you can catch another one of the same type on the same day.
Non-reserved seats are similar to reserved seatsGreen Car: This is like business class. You can enjoy extra legroom, fewer passengers, and better service, including complimentary wet towels and paid beverages. Most Shinkansen trains provide this seating option.
Green CarGran Class: Seeking a luxurious experience? This is perfect for you! You'll get to enjoy a nearly flat seat, with around 20 passengers in the carriage, indulge in butler-style service, and savour free food and drinks. However, it's only offered on select train lines.
Gran ClassBest 2 Ways to Buy Shinkansen Tickets
The two popular ways to buy Shinkansen tickets are online or at station vending machines.
Buying Tickets Online
After trying both methods, buying tickets on the Shinkansen's official website (SmartEx) is my top pick.
You can secure your preferred seat in advance, have more train options, get early bird discounts, and skip the lines.
Don't stress about making online reservations! The official website has an English interface and easy-to-follow instructions.
Once you've purchased your ticket, you'll get a QR code. It's wise to take a screenshot and save it. Just scan the code at the turnstile when boarding the Shinkansen for a quick and convenient entry.
You can also enter the turnstile by scanning the QR codeYou can buy tickets one month in advance on the official website. This is especially important during busy times like cherry blossom season, holidays, and weekends. Buying early ensures you get the specific train and seat of your choice.
I don't recommend buying Shinkansen tickets from third-party websites, such as Klook. They often charge a service fee, leading to higher costs.

Buying Tickets at the Station Vending Machines
Shinkansen vending machinesIf you're uncertain about your travel plans, not traveling during peak season, or just going on a short trip (lasting 1-2 hours), this way is better for you.
You can find Shinkansen ticket machines at major city stations like Tokyo Station, Kyoto Station, and Shin-Osaka Station.
Using the vending machines is simple. They have an English interface and give step-by-step instructions. Before booking, double-check your Shinkansen route, departure station, and destination to ensure you get the right tickets. Nearby staff will assist you if needed.
Having cash on hand is best for buying tickets. Most machines only accept cash, with a few specific ones taking credit cards.
Avoid using the vending machines during holidays, as tickets for most routes may sell out.
Looking for an easier way? Head to the staffed ticket counter. Just tell the staff of your destination, seat preference, and whether you have oversized luggage. They will take care of everything and provide you with your tickets.
How Early Should I Buy a Shinkansen Ticket?
Wait for the Shinkansen on the platformShinkansen tickets can be purchased one month in advance.
If you buy tickets online, you can do so up to one month early. For trips during shoulder season, booking 1-2 weeks ahead is also fine. Buying early could also lead to early-bird discounts for you.
When buying from station vending machines, you can buy tickets on the day of travel. However, be prepared to wait in line, won't get any discounts, and seat options may be limited.
Don't buy tickets at vending machines during peak seasons (like Golden Week or New Year). Tickets can sell out fast, especially on popular routes such as Tokyo to Osaka.

Do I Need to Buy a Shinkansen Ticket for My Luggage?
Seat with an oversized baggage compartmentUsually, you don't need to buy an extra ticket for luggage between 20-28 inches. Just place it in the overhead rack or in front of your seat.
But if your luggage is oversized (total dimensions between 160-250 cm), you must reserve your seat with an oversized baggage compartment online beforehand.
These seats are in the last row of every car. I strongly recommend booking a month early online, as they are in high demand and limited.
If you bring oversized luggage without pre-booking, you might face a fee of US$7 (1,000 yen).
How Much is a Shinkansen Ticket?
ShinkansenShinkansen tickets are the most expensive compared to other train tickets in Japan. Prices depend on the distance you travel.
Take the Tokyo to Osaka Shinkansen one-way ticket as an example.
- Non-reserved seats cost around US$90
- Reserved seats cost around US$90-100
- Green Car seats cost around US$130
Want cheaper tickets? Go for the early bird special! Discounts are usually available 28, 21, 7, and 3 days before. Reserved seats are usually 10% off, while Green Car tickets can get you 15–20% off.
If you buy a JR Pass, you can exchange Shinkansen tickets. The best way to do this is by using JR Pass-supported Shinkansen ticket vending machines or staff counters at the stations.
FAQs about Buying Shinkansen Tickets
Where Can I Pick Shinkansen Tickets
A sign for the ShinkansenYou can easily pick up tickets at any station with Shinkansen vending machines.
With your pickup code and login password, you can follow the instructions to get your tickets.
For tickets with QR codes, no need to pick them up. Just scan them at the gate for entry.
Do Children Need to Purchase Shinkansen Tickets?
Children under 6 can ride the Shinkansen for free!
However, since they don't have their own seat, kids must sit on their parents' laps. If you prefer your child to have a seat, you'll need to buy a child ticket.
Children aged 6 to 12 (under 12) can buy child tickets at half price.
